Making a Difference: Community Partnerships with the Arts Programs

The Mission

The aim of The College of Arts and Sciences’ Community Partnerships with the Arts Programs is to put the University’s students and faculty into the public arts arena and to include the public in our own arts venues as well. These programs, offered through the Department of Theatre, the School of Music, and the School of Art, involve over 100 faculty members and over 800 students each year.

The Partners

Community partners include the Knoxville Symphony, Knoxville Opera, the Arts and Culture Alliance, The Tennessee Arts Commission, Knox Area Rescue Mission (KARM), East Tennessee Autistic Spectrum, Knoxville Urban League, Knoxville Public Library, Knoxville Junior League, community-based professional and non-professional actors and choral groups, the Knoxville Museum of Art, A1 Gallery, and the Arrowmont School. Partners at the University of Tennessee include the College of Arts and Sciences; the School of Music; the School of Art, the UT Downtown Gallery and Gallery 1010; the Department of Theatre and the Clarence Brown Theatre; and the Smart Communities Initiative.

Impact on UT

To remain highly competitive, UT’s arts programs work to recruit top-notch students and faculty. Community partnership programs help the UT community compete for top fine arts candidates by offering them professional placement opportunities in the local community when they arrive.

Impact on Community

Many of the area’s professional and community arts programs in the Knoxville area could not function without the involvement of UT faculty, staff, and students. Arts faculty function as jurors for art exhibitions in the community, serve on community advisory committees (KMA; the City of Knoxville’s Public Art Committee) and community boards (Arts & Culture Alliance), speak to community groups and visit public and private schools in east TN and engage students in local schools in arts-related projects.
