Grants for Clean Water Initiatives

Woodard & Curran Foundation’s 2016 giving strategy is focused on a resource basic to life and often taken for granted: clean water. The foundation is awarding two types of grants.

  • Track 11 Year Grants: Up to three smaller grants totaling $16,500 with no one grant exceeding $10,000 are available in this category, which is dedicated to addressing the problem of water scarcity through STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) initiatives. This opportunity is limited to 501(c)(3) nonprofits that are located in states where Woodard & Curran Inc. either has an office or operates a treatment facility which includes Tennessee. The deadline for applications is July 1, 2016.
  • Track 2 – 3 Year Impact Grant: This grant will total $100,000 over three consecutive years. Applicants would be pursuing funding for an innovative project applying or advancing technology to address water issues relating to climate change. The deadline for letters of interest is July 1, 2016.

Grants for Programs to Improve the Lives of Women and Girls

Ribbons of Hope – Invest in Women, Inc. provides grants to support organizations that are making a difference in women’s lives. The $100,000 grant will be given to an organization that empowers women and girls in the areas of education, health, economic independence, social well-being or human rights. The deadline for applications is May 31, 2016.


Hawkinson Honorary Award for Commitment to Peace and Justice

Selected annually, the Vincent L. Hawkinson Foundation Honorary Award is given to an individual or individuals who have made a long and significant contribution to the causes of peace and social justice. Hawkinson honorees are inspiring role models for the next generation, embodying the rewards and the struggles that are part of the pursuit of social justice and peacemaking. The deadline for nominations is May 31, 2016.


8th Annual Connecting Campuses with Communities Conference

The Center for Service and Learning and Indiana Campus Compact, invite those interested in enhancing their service learning courses or advancing their research on service learning to the Connecting Campuses with Communities (CCC) conference. The conference is a two-part event that focuses on building a network of scholars and practitioners and offers the following opportunities:

  • The Service Learning Institute is ideal for those interested in gaining strategies used to improve the quality of a service learning course. This portion will take place May 9 – May 11 at Indiana University-Purdue University in Indianapolis, IN.
  • The Research Academy is designed to strengthen one’s research on service learning while advancing their scholarship of teaching and learning. This portion will take place May 11 – May 13 at Indiana University-Purdue University in Indianapolis, IN.

The deadline for early bird registration is May 2, 2016.


NEH Grants for Humanities Connections in Undergraduate Curriculum

Through this new grant program, NEH invites proposals that reflect innovative and imaginative approaches to preparing students for their roles as engaged citizens and productive professionals in a rapidly changing and interdependent world. Grants support the development and implementation of an integrated set of courses and student engagement activities focusing on significant humanities content. A common topic, theme, or compelling issue or question must link the courses and activities. The linked courses (a minimum of three) may fulfill general education or core curriculum requirements but could also be designed primarily for students in a particular major or course of study. The Humanities Connections program gives special encouragement to projects that foster collaboration between humanities faculty and their counterparts in the social and natural sciences and pre-service or professional programs in business, engineering, health sciences, law, computer science, and other non-humanities fields. Humanities Connections projects have two core features: 1). faculty from at least two separate departments or schools at a single institution must collaborate to devise new curricular arrangements; and 2). projects must include provisions for high-impact student engagement activities that relate directly to the topic(s) of the linked courses. These activities could include individual or collaborative undergraduate research projects; opportunities for civic engagement; or a structured experience with community-based, project-based, or site-based learning. Community organizations and cultural institutions can play key roles in this regard. The deadline for applications is October 5, 2016.


Engagement Awards from Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute

The Eugene Washington PCORI Engagement Awards encourage active integration of patients, caregivers, clinicians/providers, industry, payers/purchasers, researchers, and other stakeholders as members of the research process. The Engagement Awards program provides a platform to expand the role of all stakeholders to support PCORI’s Engagement Imperative. This includes PCORI’s goals to: develop the patient-centered outcomes research community, engage the community in the research process, and promote dissemination and implementation. PCORI will fund proposals that fall into one or more of the following three categories:

  • 1). Knowledge Awards will provide insight into the decisions patients and other stakeholders face when seeking healthcare treatments, and will help us better understand where there are gaps in usable, understandable information about healthcare treatments.
  • 2). Training and Development Awards, which will equip individuals, teams, and organizations with the skills necessary to meaningfully participate in PCOR/CER as partners throughout the research process.
  • 3). Dissemination Awards, which will support organizations with strong ties to end-user audiences to prepare to disseminate and implement PCOR/CER results. They are intended for projects focused on strengthening the infrastructure and relationships necessary to actively disseminate and implement research results or products derived from PCORI studies or other high-quality PCOR/CER findings consistent with PCORI’s research priorities.

Total award costs may not exceed $250,000. The deadline for letters of intent is June 1, 2016.


University of Tennessee, Haslam College of Business Collaborative Grants

Proposals are solicited for grants to be awarded by University of Tennessee students studying nonprofits and philanthropy. Students are expected to award 1-5 grants totaling $30,000, with the typical grant likely to be $10,000 or less. The funds are to be used to foster better collaboration among teams of nonprofits working toward collective impact, addressing regional health, education, and income issues broadly defined. The primary purpose of these grants is to provide students with hands-on experience in funding nonprofit work. The secondary goal is to foster better collaboration for greater collective impact. This solicitation is open to any team of two or more nonprofit members of the Alliance for Better Nonprofits. The deadline for letters of interest is May 13, 2016.
