Community Partnerships with the Arts: School of Art

The Mission of The College of Arts and Sciences’ Community Partnerships with the Arts Programs is to put the University’s students and faculty into the public arts arena and to include the public in our own arts venues as well. These programs, offered through the Department of Theatre, the School of Music, and the School of Art, involve over 100 faculty members and over 800 students each year.

The School of Art offers service-learning courses as part of the Smart Communities Initiative. The School’s Artist-in-Residence Program and the Visiting Artists, Designers and Scholars Program further enhance the teaching environment by featuring prominent individuals who work with students in a variety of venues. The School has an active exhibition program co-sponsored by the Ewing Gallery of Art and Architecture and the University of Tennessee Downtown Gallery, which hosts major exhibitions of work by national and international artists. The School also maintains Tennessee’s only student run, non-profit exhibition space, Gallery 1010. The School of Art recognizes the immeasurable contribution of diversity to the arts and seeks in its programming and activities to incorporate diverse perspectives from the rich panoply that is the human race.
