Sawhney Wins Chancellor’s 2016 Excellence in Academic Outreach Award

This year’s Excellence in Academic Outreach honor was awarded at the 2016 Chancellor’s Honor Banquet. The banquet, hosted by Chancellor Jimmy G. Cheek, celebrates the hard work and achievements of the University’s students, faculty, and staff.

The Excellence in Academic Outreach award is granted to those who exemplify UT’s land-grant mission by using intellectual capital to benefit citizens of Tennessee. This honor is awarded to the person who employs their academic expertise to engage the community in reciprocal, collaborative relationships that: a) improve the quality of life for citizens and, b) inform the scholarship and learning of faculty and students. Nominees for this award are vetted by the Academic Outreach and Engagement Council.

2016 Excellence in Academic Outreach winnerThe 2016 award was given to Rupy Sawhney, a Health Fellow in Business and Engineering and a professor of industrial and systems engineering, who has used his expertise to develop meaningful collaboration between universities and local communities. His outreach efforts include work with middle and high school students to strengthen multicultural awareness as well as work with Knoxville residents with disabilities.
