Katy Chiles, associate professor of English, and her students have conducted poetry workshops with teens from Knoxville’s YWCA Phyllis Wheatley Center this summer. The project culminated on June 25 when the group viewed a rare first edition of Wheatley’s Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral. Wheatley for whom the center is named, was an enslaved African poet. The workshop was conducted in collaboration with the Office of Community Engagement and Outreach and UT Libraries.
