UT’s David Hughes Receives Distinguished Extension/Outreach Award

Professor David Hughes has received honorable mention for the Distinguished Extension/Outreach Program Award from the Agricultural & Applied Economics Association. Hughes is a professor and Greever Endowed Chair in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics. He led fourteen team members from six land-grant universities, a nonprofit, and USDA AMS. The team developed a seven module curriculum. The award was for team’s work on The Economics of Local Food Systems: A Toolkit to Guide Community Discussions, Assessments and Choices.The toolkit provides communities with a free resource that assists with more standardized, targeted evaluations of food systems, which will likely result in better-informed policy and regulatory decisions. Further, it has led to an eXtension Community of Practice (localfoodeconomics.com​) and to numerous trainings across the country, including Knoxville and Memphis.
